What to Think About Before Going Solar

As the climate changes, many people have changed their ways and draw the power from the sun with solar panels.

As we burn more fossil fuels, more greenhouse gasses are released into the atmosphere, which traps infrared radiation–heat. Solar panels draw their power from the sun, which is not clean, but infinitely renewable. (Infinite, in terms of human perspective.)

Many people have chosen to install solar panels as a way to not only help the planet, but to decrease their utility bill. But before you go solar, here are a few things about which you need to think.

Does my home get enough sun?

Here’s the thing with solar panels: they need to receive sun in order to function and generate power. If your home does not get enough sun and is not positioned correctly, the energy produced may not be enough to offset the initial installation cost.

Will it be worth my investment?

Examine your current and future needs. Take a look at how your city generates power. If you live near a hydroelectric dam, your savings may not be as high as someone that lives in a remote area with higher electricity costs. Also, if you are starting a family, your electric bill may be on the rise. Conversely, if your kids are about ready to leave the nest, your bill may already be on its way down.

Will solar panels increase my homeowners insurance?

Solar panels will undoubtedly increase your home’s worth, which means that you may see an increase in your homeowners insurance, so don’t forget to include your panels in your home inventory. And while it may increase, it may be worth not having to explain to your grandchildren what whales and polar bears were in the future.

While these questions are important to ask, it is also worth remembering that solar panel technology increases every day, and what may be a hurdle today may be nothing tomorrow.

  • “When we want develop partnerships with vendors, the deciding factor is always based on a single question…Do they pick up their phone? At Risk Management, they pick up their phone. In the indoor trampoline park industry, we have dealt with several insurance agencies that were always more concerned about their commission, not building a business relationship or serving our needs. On more than one occasion, Risk Management has stepped in and helped us with carrier/policies issues that the incumbent agencies had dropped the ball on. There was no financial reward for Risk Management in these situations, they see a problem and help fix it. They just do business the right way. Steve Young and his team at Risk Management represent us, not the carrier. We highly recommend Risk Management.”
