The winter brings snow–and lots of it–so it’s important to know how you can drive safely on the snowy roads.
The snow makes the perfect scenery for a Discovery Channel nature documentary and it makes for exciting Packers football, but it hardly makes the ideal scenario for the roads of Wisconsin. When the snows fall on the roads, it makes for very dangerous situations, as even the simplest of turns can turn into a horrific accident. Before you hit the winter roads of Wisconsin, take these winter driving tips into consideration.
Safety Tips for Winter Driving
- Clear the Ice
Having an ice scraper in your car is essential, because if you park your vehicle outside overnight in the sub-freezing temperatures of Wisconsin, your car is going to be covered by ice or frost. Use the ice scraper to remove the ice from the front and rear windshield and both mirrors. To facilitate ice removal, leave your car running with the heat on for about five minutes. - Headlights On
When it snows, and you’re on the road, make sure to turn on your lights to increase the visibility of your car. - Watch Out for Black Ice
Black ice is just a thin layer of normal ice that lies on top of the road. Even though it’s just a thin layer, many people aren’t aware and drive like they would on a dry road which will be a problem when turning or braking. - Leave Space
Surprise! Snow and ice are slippery. When driving on snowy roads, make sure to leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you to make sure you have the space to come to a complete and controlled stop.
