Summer is right around the corner and for many of us, that signals the time to fire up the BBQ grill.
Nothing is quite as relaxing as firing up the BBQ grill and cooking out back under the warm sun and fresh air of summer. Invite a few friends over with which to share a few cold ones and it’s hard to imagine a better day. But cooking with such a large machine can mean trouble, especially if you have never cooked with a BBQ before. If you want your summer day to be filled with good memories and fun times, make sure that you follow these summer BBQ safety tips.
- Grill ≥10 feet away from your home. The farther the better, and this includes parts like garages and porches, too! Never use your grill under the wooden overhangs which could easily flare up with an unfortunate gust of wind.
- Clean the grill regularly. As you cook, the natural fats and oils that are secreted during the cooking process can stick to the grill. These chemicals can provide more fuel to the fire and are major sources of flare-ups.
- Never leave a grill unattended. You never know what can happen when you leave a fire unattended. When you are dealing with flammable food, it’s best to always stay with it and do all your prep chores before you fire up the grill.
- Don’t use a grill indoors. You’d think this is obvious, but enough people do it to where we have to say something. Even small grills are not to be used indoors. Aside from the obvious fire hazard, fires produce carbon monoxide which is an invisible, odorless, and deadly gaseous byproduct.
