Shoveling is the chore we all hate to do, but one we need do to help our cars move in and out of the driveway.
We all love to play in the snow and make snowmen, snow angels, and throw the occasional snowball. But, as with most things in life, snow is not all play–it comes with a bit of work as well, and that mostly arrives in the form of shoveling. Before you get outside and start to shovel, take these safety tips into consideration to avoid any accidents.
Shoveling Safety Tips
- Dress Warmly – Before you go out and start shoveling, you have to make sure that you are wearing the right gear. A good winter jacket, a scarf, a warm hat, gloves, snow pants, and snow boots are all required to keep warm in the winter.
- Push, Don’t Lift – Instead of lifting the snow (which can be heavy), push the snow to the edges. It not only requires less energy it also saves time! Unfortunately, you can’t avoid all lifting, so when you do lift, bend your knees and lift with your legs.
- Check the Forecast – Whether you wait until the snow stops or shovel to keep snow levels on your driveway as low as possible, it all depends on the weather forecast. If it only snows a few hours, you might want to wait until it stops snowing to get it all out of the way. If it is snowing all day, you may want to go out and shovel away the snow every two or three hours to keep the levels manageable.
- Make Your Teen Do It – They’re living rent-free and play video games all day. Why not force them to take a break and get some good exercise! (Just be sure to inform them of these helpful hints before they go out there.)
