Halloween is a fun holiday in which our children dress up as their favorite hero or villain and get free candy.
Do you remember the days when you used to dress up for Halloween, go out with your friends, and trick-or-treat until sundown? It seems like it was yesterday, doesn’t it? Now it is our children’s turn to do as we did. Of course, we want to make sure that everything is safe for them–so here are some great Halloween safety tips to keep your child safe.
Walking Safely
- When crossing the street, they should do so at corners and use traffic signals and the corresponding crosswalks.
- Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street. Continue to look both ways while they cross to make sure no cars sneak up on them.
- Children should learn to make eye contact with drivers and not cross until they get the direct go-ahead from them.
- They should always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, they should walk facing traffic as far to the left as they possibly can.
- They should not text and walk. It’s easy for our children to be distracted in our digital world, so stress the importance of looking up while they walk.
- Watch out for cars backing up from their driveway. Teach children never to dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
Trick-or-Treat With an Adult
- Children under the age of 12 should not trick-or-treat alone at night without supervision. If kids are mature enough to go out without adult supervision, make sure they stick to the familiar area.
Keep Costumes Safe
- Bright colors and reflective surfaces are best at keeping your child safe.
