Tax season doesn’t have to be filled with headaches and stress!
Spring brings back warm weather; and with that the melting of snow, the greening of trees, and the joys of being able to enjoy going outside with countless layers! Life rarely gives good without the bad, though. Attached to spring comes another season that many think is the absolute worst: tax season.
Thankfully, we can prepare for this season to reduce the stress that comes along with it. Here are 5 simple things you can do to help you.
- No shame in getting help. If you’re afraid of doing your taxes yourself, you aren’t alone! Ask your friends and relatives about how they handle their taxes. Who prepares them? Are they good at preparing their taxes? Ask if they could recommend anyone who could help you out with your taxes.
- Have a central location for your documents. This is very important to ensure you do not lose any important documents that could come to haunt you down the stretch. It could be a folder or one of your desk drawers; just be sure to have one location for all of your forms.
- Estimate. It’s always best to round up, then to round down if you want to avoid an eye-popping surprise in a few months. By estimating, you will have a good idea on whether or not you’ll be owing taxes.
- Start saving! If you estimate that you will have a bill by the end of the season, it’s much better to have too much savings than not enough.
- Do it now. Don’t wait until the last second to do everything at once. If you do, you will make a costly mistake. Being able to double-check your work is a must to catch any errors you may have committed. Have a plan—like spending an hour on Sunday night on your taxes—and stick with it!
