How to Reduce the Risk to Your Commercial Vehicles

Your commercial vehicles need to be insured in case they get damaged by a covered peril.

Whether your business owns a fleet of vehicles to deliver your goods and services or you simply use your personal car to drive to meetings, you need a quality commercial auto insurance policy at your side. Your insurance agent can help you analyze all the risks to your business car(s) and help you get a commercial auto insurance policy that covers you from any and all pending risks. But, commercial auto insurance can only take you so far, and it’s best to keep them from disaster in the first place. Here are a few ways you can reduce the risk to your commercial vehicles.

Driving Rules

  • No texting or calling – Distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents, so it’s best that your employees leave their phones in their pockets or purse when they’re conducting.
  • Seatbelts are mandatory – Seatbelts have saved lives and reduce injuries. There is no logical excuse to not wear a seatbelt.

Vehicle-Use Guidelines

  • Follow the speed limit – Speed limits exist for a reason, make sure that your employees follow these limits to better ensure safety.
  • Lock and secure the vehicle – The vehicle should be locked at all times, no matter how little time the employee will be away from the car.
  • Limit non-business driving – Employees may use their personal car for some business-related travel, but you should limit business vehicles to business-use only.

Employee-Centered Practices

  • Know your employees – Before your employees start driving, you should look up their driving record and ban any employees that have had serious previous infractions.
  • Training – The best way to know that your employees know the car rules is by giving them the proper training.

  • “When we want develop partnerships with vendors, the deciding factor is always based on a single question…Do they pick up their phone? At Risk Management, they pick up their phone. In the indoor trampoline park industry, we have dealt with several insurance agencies that were always more concerned about their commission, not building a business relationship or serving our needs. On more than one occasion, Risk Management has stepped in and helped us with carrier/policies issues that the incumbent agencies had dropped the ball on. There was no financial reward for Risk Management in these situations, they see a problem and help fix it. They just do business the right way. Steve Young and his team at Risk Management represent us, not the carrier. We highly recommend Risk Management.”
