Get a Bird’s Eye View When It Comes to Drone Insurance

Drones are quickly becoming the hottest gadget in the market as it gives users control of a tiny air vessel.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! Oh—wait, no, it’s a drone!  These neat pieces of technology are taking the market by storm and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimates that over 1 million drones will be sold this holiday season. Everyone from photographers, who have a whole new method of taking pictures, to law enforcement, who are using it to see places which would be all but impossible without it, have been using drones. But because these are so new, there are a number of issues to consider ranging from personal injury and property damage, to privacy concerns. Know what insurance options you have should your drone cause any damage to property or actual human beings, and how to keep these accidents from occurring.

Keeping your drone safe without causing harm:

Hobbyists have been flying model aircrafts for decades. However, older remote-controlled aircrafts were either poorly made, or too complicated to fly for the average Joe. Advances in technology allow drones to hover quietly and fly far from their pilot with precise movements. According to the FAA, there will be 30,000 small drones used for business purposes—and this doesn’t include hobbyists’ drones.

Some drones can weigh as much as 55 pounds. A fall from distance will cause some serious damage to property, and could be fatal should it fall on some heads. Here are some guidelines to help avoid those kinds of accidents.

  • Keep the aircraft in eyesight at all times.
  • Don’t fly within five miles of an airport, unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying.
  • Fly no higher than 400 feet, and stay clear of obstacles.
  • Avoid flying near people or stadiums.
  • Use caution when flying your unmanned vehicle.

Obtaining insurance for your personal drone isn’t very difficult. But obtaining drones for commercial use is currently up in the air, but will very likely come to fruition as Amazon is planning on using drones to ship out their smaller items.

  • “When we want develop partnerships with vendors, the deciding factor is always based on a single question…Do they pick up their phone? At Risk Management, they pick up their phone. In the indoor trampoline park industry, we have dealt with several insurance agencies that were always more concerned about their commission, not building a business relationship or serving our needs. On more than one occasion, Risk Management has stepped in and helped us with carrier/policies issues that the incumbent agencies had dropped the ball on. There was no financial reward for Risk Management in these situations, they see a problem and help fix it. They just do business the right way. Steve Young and his team at Risk Management represent us, not the carrier. We highly recommend Risk Management.”
